Cautions & Warnings

This comprehensive catalog provides a deep look into Sea Link’s distribution and manufacturing expertise. It details the company’s rigorous quality control processes, adherence to ASME B30.26 and North American standards, and available third-party certifications (ABS, DNV, GL). It includes selection guides for tackle blocks, maintenance protocols, and lubrication schedules essential for safety

Essential Safety: Cautions & Warnings for Tackle Blocks and Sheaves

Proper operation and rigorous maintenance are vital for the safety of any lifting system. Before utilizing Sea Link products, ensure all personnel are trained in the following safety protocols and inspection standards.

General Operational Warnings
  • Linear Tension Only: These products are engineered exclusively for tension or straight-line pulls; side loading is strictly prohibited as it creates unintended structural stress.
  • Electrical Conductivity: Metallic crane components and wire ropes are conductors of electricity; operators must maintain safe distances from power lines as per OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1501 Subpart N.
  • Load Positioning: The load must be fully supported by the bowl of the hook. Never apply weight to the hook tip or the safety latch.
  • System Utilization: Working Load Limit (WLL) ratings are predicated on using all sheaves in a block. If sheaves are bypassed, the WLL must be reduced and the load balanced to avoid system failure.
  • Personnel Hoisting: Standard blocks are not for personnel lifting; only specialized hooks with secured latches (such as Crosby or McKissick PL/PL-N styles) should be used for hoisting people.
  • Safety Hazards: Personnel must remain clear of “pinch points” where the rope enters the sheave or contacts the load.
  • Modifications: Welding on or altering load-bearing parts is hazardous and requires prior consultation with the manufacturer regarding heat treatment and material integrity.
Inspection and Maintenance Standards
  • Frequent Assessments: Regular inspections are mandatory to determine if a product remains suitable for its assigned WLL or if it must be retired.
  • Wear Thresholds: Components must be removed from service if wear in a single direction exceeds 10% of the original dimension, or if wear in two directions exceeds 5% of each dimension.
  • Deformation and Cracks: Immediate withdrawal from service is required if any visible cracks or permanent deformations (such as bent plates or elongated holes) are detected.
  • “As New” Requirement: Rated capacities are valid only for products in new or “as new” condition; corrosion, misuse, or overloading can significantly diminish the WLL.
  • Dynamic Loading: The WLL is based on static loads; impact, shock loading, or abnormal environmental conditions require a reduction in the applied load.
  • Surface Restoration: Nicks and gouges on fittings should be carefully removed by grinding to restore a smooth surface and prevent stress concentrations.
